Lake Shinji
Lake Shinji is the seventh largest lake in Japan, and is a combination of fresh-water and salt-water, depending on the tide.
The sunset over the lake is especially famous for its vivid color and beauty, and is a symbol of the 'Water Capital', Matsue.
Fishing Shijimi at Lake Shinji
Shijimi clams are one of the seven delicacies of Lake Shinji.
The type of shinji taken from Lake Shinji is called yamato shijimi.
Early in the morning, you can see fishermen in boats on Lake Shinji fishing for clams.
Matsue Castle
Matsue Castle was built by the first Lord and founding father of Matsue, Yoshiharu Horio in 1611,and it remains as a symbol of Matsue, the Castle Town.
The roof of the castle is said to be in the shape of the wings of a plover bird, which is 'Chidori' in Japanese.
Shiomi Nawate
Shiomi Nawate is a street to the north of the castle, overlooking the castle moat that has been designated as a traditional beauty area of this city.
It is a peaceful street, along which the Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum, Lafcadio Hearn's Former Residence, the Tanabe art museum, and the Samurai house are lined up.
There are also old pine trees along the moat, retaining an atmosphere of days gone by.
Buke Yashiki (Samurai House)
This Samurai House was built more than 260 years ago, and would have been the residence of a middle-ranking samurai family.
There are swords, tools for dyeing teeth, and other household goods displayed here.
Horikawa Meguri (Around Matsue's Canals)
The city of Matsue grew up and flourished around Matsue castle. All the canals that encircle the castle were constructed at the same time the castle itself was built. As well as serving to protect Matsue castle and the surrounding town, the canals provided transportation for goods and people, water for use in daily life, and rich fishing grounds. Today their attractive landscape is one of Matsue's best-known features.
Matsue Vogel Park
This is a park full of flowers and birds that are unusual in Japan.
The themed flower greenhouses are amongst in the world, where you can enjoy thousands of varieties of Begonia and Fuchsia blooming all year long.
Izumo Soba
The characteristics of Izumo soba are the grey-black color, the firm texture and fine aroma. This soba is normally served in round dishes known as 'warigo', with seaweed, spring onion, and a thick sauce.
Japanese Tea and Confectionery
Along with Kyoto and Kanazawa, Matsue is known as a town famous for the tea ceremony.
Tea has been an integral part of life in Matsue since the time of the 7th feudal lord, Matsudaira Harusato (Fumai), who loved the tea ceremony and who founded his own school, known as the 'Fumai' school of tea ceremony.
There are many teahouses and confectionery shops still remaining around the city.
The Seven Delicacies of Lake Shinji
Lake Shinji,which is mix of fresh and salt-water,has given rise to a unique and varied food culture. The whitebait of early spring, the shinji clams and eel of summer, shrimp of autumn, bass, smelt and carp of winter are collectively known as the seven delicacies of Lake Shinji.
