These dolls are said to
have been originally handmade by the ladies-in-waiting to the Matsue clan
as a means of passing the time and by the daughters of samurai families
as toys. Many kinds of anesama ningyo are found throughout Japan, but Matsue's
dolls are particularly elegant. Anesama ningyo ordinarily have very simplified
faces, but the dolls of Matsue have sweet faces with small round mouths,
delicate eyes, and rosy cheeks. Lafcadio Hearn described the dolls as having
oval faces with long, sloped, shiny eyes cast downwards demurely. |
